Burns are a more common occurrence in the workplace than many may consider. While the type and severity of a burn can vary depending on the work environment, there are still dangers and precautions are needed. Everywhere from an office to a construction site should have a workplace first aid kit fully stocked with products that can address burns properly.
Here are 3 things to keep in mind when it comes to treating burns in the workplace.
Cool the Burn
The first thing you want to do when someone has been burned is to cool it down. Immediately run the affected area under cold water for a few minutes to relieve some of the pain they are feeling. If you’re not able to get to a sink you may also use a clean towel and dampen it with the cold water and lay it over the burn. You should leave it covered and cooling for at least 10-15 minutes.
Dress the Injury
Your workplace first aid kit will come in handy during these situations as covering and dressing the burn is an important factor in immediate care and keeping it clean. After you have cooled down the burn and dried the area, you should apply clean dressing like gauze or a bandage (if small) over the burn. Do not attempt to use any lotions or ointments on the affected area until you have had it assessed by a professional.
Consider Next Steps
It’s important to keep infections at bay. Consider having a doctor check out the burn and see if there is further treatment needed. These newly exposed injuries have a high rate of leading to bacterial infections so it’s important to care properly for serious burns and never let them go unattended. In cases when third-degree and more serious burns have occurred, call 9-1-1 immediately and keep the victim calm with injured limbs elevated until emergency response arrives.
