Skiing is a favorite winter pastime for many. While it can be thrilling, skiing is also dangerous. No matter your level of experience, accidents, and injuries can happen. This is why it’s essential to take one or more first aid kits along on your ski trip.

What You Should Have in a First Aid Kit

Since a wide range of injuries can occur while skiing, it’s best to be prepared for as many scenarios as possible. That means you should have supplies to treat everything from minor cuts and scrapes to broken bones.

The first aid kit for your ski trip should include plenty of bandages in a range of sizes, plus gauze, antiseptic towelettes, and antibiotic ointment. You should have splints in assorted sizes to treat arm and leg injuries, as well as latex gloves, scissors, and pain-relieving medication.

Consider the individuals who will be going on the ski trip. If the group will include both adults and children, make sure you have splints and other supplies in appropriate sizes for kids and pain relievers that are safe for children. If anyone needs medication, make sure it’s packed in the first aid kit.

Think about the number of people who will be going along on the ski trip and plan accordingly. Make sure you will have enough supplies if several individuals get injured.

You should also include a flashlight in your first aid kit. Even if you’re planning to leave before sunset, you might decide to stay later or get lost, or you might encounter a medical emergency in the late afternoon and still be on the mountain when it’s getting dark.

Bring Enough First Aid Kits and Keep Them Close

If a large group will be going on the ski trip and you might separate at some point, take two or more first aid kits. Each kit should include any supplies you might need. Make sure everyone on the trip knows who has a kit.

It’s best to have a first aid kit with you on the slopes, especially if you will be some distance from your car and won’t be able to return there easily to get supplies in an emergency. Pack your first aid supplies in a compact, water-resistant backpack or another container that will be easy to carry and that won’t interfere with your ability to ski.
