Almost everyone has had a similar experience. They’re playing a sport, or climbing a tree, or running, and they slip and fall. Usually, this winds up with a scraped knee or elbow. Sometimes, though, it can become more serious and result in a broken bone. Now, we’re taking a closer look at not only identifying a broken bone, but what you should do if you see someone who has had this serious injury.

How to Recognize a Broken Bone

It’s usually apparent when someone is hurt. However, it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between a broken limb and a sprain. When in doubt, though, the individual should always go see a specialist in order to determine whether or not the bone is actually broken. However, there are ways to figure out if a broken bone is more likely or not.

First, see if the area is showing swelling or bruising. Then, check if the limb shows some kind of deformity. This could indicate a snapped bone that may be at an odd angle. In addition, gently put pressure on the area; if pain becomes worse, then it may very well be broken. The bone is also likely broken if the injured area can’t be moved (for example, a broken ankle).

How to Treat a Broken Limb

The first thing you want to do is to stop any bleeding that may be occurring. This could happen if the bone punctures the skin or if there are scrapes or cuts around the area. If a bone has poked through the skin, don’t try to realign the bone or push it back in. You’ll want to splint the area above and below the fracture sites, assuming you’ve been trained in splinting.

While transporting the person to medical assistance, make sure to apply ice packs to help limit swelling and relieve pain. Don’t apply ice directly to the skin, but instead wrap it in a towel or piece of cloth.

First Aid Supplies for Broken Limbs

One of the most important things you need to deal with a broken limb is a first aid kit. You’ll be able to use ice packs and other items in order to deal with broken limbs and also any other injuries that may occur.
