Although some areas are more prone to earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes than others, anyone living anywhere can be a victim of some type of natural disaster. With that reality in mind, be proactive and assemble essential supplies that you and your family may need if a natural disaster strikes. Simple preparations may mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Assemble Essential Supplies

If a natural disaster occurs, tree limbs and other objects may become projectiles, and buildings may be severely damaged or destroyed. That may result in a wide range of injuries. In addition, first responders may be unable to reach people quickly due to blocked roads and damaged structures.

If someone is injured in a disaster, it may be up to you or other members of your family to provide first aid. Make sure that you have a first aid kit with supplies that can be used to treat common injuries. If you and your family haven’t had formal first aid training, sign up for a class so you’ll know what to do in an emergency.

After a natural disaster, you may have to shelter in place for several days. Stock up so you have enough nonperishable food for each member of your family for at least three days. If you have canned food, make sure you have a manual can opener. You should also have a gallon of water per person, per day.

If any member of your family requires specific supplies, such as prescription medication, diapers, or formula, have enough of those items on hand. Think about your pets, too. Make sure you have enough food and other vital supplies for them.

Natural disasters often lead to widespread power outages that can stretch for several days, or even weeks. Stock up on flashlights and batteries. If you don’t already have one, buy a battery-powered radio so you’ll be able to listen to news updates and instructions from authorities.

Be Prepared for a Disaster
