Creating a First Aid Cabinet for Day Care Centers

While most workplaces today have some type of first-aid solution for workers injured or sick on the job, they tend to be a bit one-size-fits-all. Bandages, aspirin, antiseptic wipes and gauze are about as sophisticated as these kits get. It’s important to tailor the first aid kit to the likely victims of bumps, bruises, and illness, however. For daycare centers, this means that standard workplace first aid kids won’t be a good fit. Instead, consider putting together a first-aid cabinet that fits the health needs of young children.

Compared to adult first aid kits, kits for children will have different needs. These include:

No aspirin.

Aspirin is not recommended for children and teens during a viral illness such as influenza or COVID-19. In rare cases, it can lead to a potentially fatal condition called Reye’s syndrome. Reye’s syndrome is defined by sudden brain damage and liver function problems. In some cases, it can cause seizures, coma, and death in children and teens. Instead, ensure your daycare center kit has acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.

Disposable, non-porous gloves.

Young children are often vectors for many viral and bacterial illnesses. They may be too young to cover their coughs and sneezes, and they will touch their mouths, eyes, and noses frequently. They may not be effective hand-washers. For adults providing first-aid to young children, particularly in cold and flu season, using gloves is recommended.

Pediatric thermometer.

Not all thermometers are created for pediatric use. Young children are often unable to keep traditional thermometers in their mouths for the time necessary to register a temperature. In addition, oral and rectal thermometers can spread germs. Ensure you have a good, high-quality digital forehead thermometer designed for children.

Children’s bandages.

While it’s true that adult bandages will do the trick in a practical sense, colorful bandages with cheerful images on them may be just what’s needed to distract a crying child to sit still long enough for an attendant to tend a wound.
