Workplaces across the U.S. have chemicals present at their premises that can put workers in danger if improper handling or unsafe storage of those irritants occurs. The Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) has a number of rules in place to protect workers and employers from serious injuries and hefty fines.

Part of OSHA’s “Worker Rights” include the right to proper training on job functions as well as safe handling of chemicals and other dangers present in the work environment. Employees also have the right to request that employers correct known hazards and can even request that OSHA perform an inspection of the premises.

Chemical danger from skin irritations and disorders to respiratory illnesses and more serious long-term problems are all possible risks when exposure to chemicals are present. Here are some tips for keeping your workplace safe.

Offer Frequent Training

Identifying hazards and correcting any issues as well as offering training to employees on how to handle the handling safely to prevent injury is critical. Have a chemical hygiene plan that all employees understand and know how to address situations should they arise. Offer this training frequently to keep the information current and fresh in all new and senior employee’s minds.

Use Personal Protective Equipment

Perhaps the most important supplies to order for workplaces where dangerous chemicals are handled or come anywhere near workers is protective equipment. Goggles, face shields, gloves and coveralls are all necessary to protect the skin and internal organs from coming into contact with the chemicals.

Order First Aid Supplies

Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit is a requirement for any workplace. However, with chemical dangers present, there will also need to be supplies added to the kit to address accidents under these conditions. Supplies such as eyewash stations, showers and cleaners and proper signage for dangerous areas and proper extinguishers should all be present on location.

1stAidSupplies.com offers protective equipment to keep workers safe when dealing with a number of hazardous situations including battery acid and chemical spills.
