Revised ANSI First Aid Kit Requirements for 2015
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is a sub-agency within the Department of Labor that issues standards related to workplace health and safety. OSHA requires that workplaces have a first aid kit available to treat minor injuries that occur on the job.
First aid kits must comply with requirements set by OSHA. However, OSHA does not approve or certify specific first aid kits. First aid kits can be “OSHA compliant.”
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes minimum standards for many safety-related items. This includes minimum requirements for what must be contained in a workplace first aid kit. While these standards are not mandatory, over 20 states have adopted ANSI’s standards as their state recommended requirements.
ANSI sets standards for the minimum items that should be included in first aid kits. These include absorbent compresses, adhesive bandages, adhesive tape, antiseptic, burn treatment applications, sterile pads, medical exam gloves, triangular bandages, and antibiotic treatment applications.
ANSI recommends other components for first aid kits, including oral analgesics, bandage compresses, single-use breathing barriers, burn dressings, cold packs, eye coverings, eye/face wash, roller bandages, and hand sanitizer.
ANSI’s guidelines cover two classes of first aid kits. Class A kits are designed to treat common workplace injuries, and Class B kits have a broader range of supplies that can be helpful in more complex or high-risk environments.
